Low-Frequency Marsquakes and Where to Find Them: Back Azimuth Determination Using a Polarization Analysis Approach

ABSTRACT National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, Heat Transport (InSight) mission on Mars continues to record seismic data over 3 yr after landing, a thousand marsquakes have been identified, date. With only single station, the determination of epicentral location is far more challenging than Earth. The Marsquake Service (MQS) produces seismicity catalogs from collected by InSight, provides distance back azimuth estimates when these can be reliably determined; both are available, combined provide location. Currently, MQS does not assign vast majority marsquakes. In this work we develop apply polarization analysis method determine events observed P- S-wave arrivals. first applied synthetic then calibrated set well-located earthquakes that recorded in Tennant Creek, Australia. We find estimated our method. same approach used for high-quality up October 2021. able estimate azimuths 24 marsquakes, 16 without azimuths. locate most east general region Cerberus Fossae.
